“More immediately, any Art History that does otherwise doesn’t really do much more than feed into existing institutional and market structures by lending discursive legitimacy to art-qua-commodity. Art History, in other words, doesn’t do much more than give people a nice story so that they know they’re getting their money’s worth when they buy a painting or pay their museum admission. In addition to reifying art and the history of art, moreover, Art History just as well cements the auratic mythologization of art itself by constantly affirming its undeserved privileged status within culture at large. It translates social and class distinction into an epistemological one, perverting the art object (in its different manifestations through history) into its present privileged mode of commodity-object. In sum, it begs the question: we study artworks because they’re important, but they’re important because they’re being studied (even when Art History challenges the canon, it is all too often doing nothing more than move the goal posts, replacing one privileged term for another without changing the encompassing structure in which those terms hold meaning). And from there, it institutes this circular self-aggrandization to the bloated levels of museumification and auction-housery, those mausolea that are all too content to lay art to rest forevermore.”
